What is a Concussion?

Concussion | Max Physiotherapy | Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage and Health & Wellness Clinic | NE Calgary

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that is caused by extreme force such as a direct blow to the head, neck, or face, or from a blow to another part of the body with a force transmitted to the head. Concussions bruise or stretch nerves and blood vessels and cause chemical changes in your brain that result in temporary loss of normal brain function. They are usually not life threatening, although the effects can be serious and last for days, weeks, or even longer.

How Can a Concussion be Managed?

Concussion Treatment | Max Physiotherapy | Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage and Health & Wellness Clinic | NE Calgary

Treatment for a concussion depends on the particular circumstances presented and may require a team of healthcare professionals who work together to provide integrated care. Many concussions will resolve on their own within 7-10 days. However, if symptoms of a concussion persist, it is imperative to receive care from trained professionals with experience treating concussions. Max Physiotherapy will provide you with a customized treatment plan based on your particular symptoms, to help you return to your regular life and activities of daily living. After a comprehensive assessment (both physical and cognitive), we might recommend a physiotherapist to help with strengthening your neck muscles, vestibular physical therapy to help with balance and prevent dizziness, manual therapy to ensure the joints are moving well, and myofascial release techniques to ensure good mobility of the surrounding soft tissue. Whatever treatment is recommended, you can rest assured that Max Physiotherapy is always committed to helping you reach your optimal health and wellness.
