What is Whiplash?

Whiplash | Max Physiotherapy | Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage and Health & Wellness Clinic | NE Calgary

Whiplash is a generalized term for a soft tissue injury to your neck following a sudden, forceful, rapid back-and-forth trauma to your neck. The most common whiplash injury is the result of a car accident, although it can also result from other things like sports accidents, physical abuse, and other types of traumas such as a fall. Whiplash occurs when the soft tissues of your neck extend beyond their typical range of motion. The symptoms of whiplash can be felt immediately after the motor vehicle accident (or trauma), or even 2 to 3 days after the accident. While whiplash is thought to be a relatively minor condition, it can cause long-term pain and discomfort.

What are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

Symptoms of whiplash usually occur within 24 hours of the accident. However, sometimes symptoms may develop after a few days. Common symptoms include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Pain between the shoulder blades and/or down the arm
  • Headaches, specially at the base of the skull
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Inability to move or turn the head fully
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, or fingers
  • Shoulder injury
  • Injury to the lower back or other parts of the body (these other injured areas may contribute to whiplash symptoms and delay recovery from whiplash).

It is important to be seen by a healthcare provider as soon as possible after a motor vehicle accident, or any sudden injury involving the neck. There is a wide range of symptoms associated with whiplash, and not every one of them can be immediately traceable to whiplash. Max Physiotherapy is proud to offer a range of services, including chiropractic care, physiotherapy, and massage therapy to patients who are suffering from whiplash. Treatment will be unique to each whiplash injury and will depend on the primary dysfunction detected during your exam.
