What is a Bulging Disc?

Chiropractic Care | Max Physiotherapy | Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage and Health & Wellness Clinic | NE Calgary

A bulging disc is akin to letting air out of a tire. The disc begins to sag and looks like it is bulging outward. A bulging disk can push against the spinal cord and the roots of the nerves, leading to severe pain and mobility problems. Your spinal column consists of a series of bones that are stacked onto one another. Between each one lies a little pad called the intervertebral discs, which are made up of a tough outer ring and a soft gel-like centre. These discs act as cushions to the bones, so that the bones do not make contractions with each other as you move about your day. Weakness, injury and even age can cause the soft inner part of the disc to begin to show signs of wear and tear. Discs also dehydrate over time, causing the cartilage to stiffen. These changes can cause the outer layer of the disc to bulge out all the way around the circumference of the disc. protrude through the outer ring.
